World-reknowned field recordist Gordon Hempton, author of “One Square Inch of Silence” (a great read) and subject of the recent documentary “Soundtracker” (a great film), was recently interviewed by The Sun on his quest for silence in the natural world. Having transformed from a commerical sound recordist into something of an acoustic ecologist, his tale is indicative of the need to preserve areas of natural quiet, not just for field recordists, but for the good of wildlife and the spirit of humankind.
