Roland R-26, New 6-Channel Portable Recorder

Roland has announced the R-26, a new portable recorder that features four buil-in mics (two directional in XY and two omnis at sides) and also two XLR/TRS (with phantom power of +48V) and one stereo 1/8″ (with plugin power) connections. This unit can record audio at 96kHz/24-Bit on six channels simultaneously (4 built-in + 2 external). Also features a hi-res LCD touchscreen display which looks great.

  • Two XLR/TRS combo inputs with 48 V phantom power, plus an input for a stereo plug-in powered mic
  • Supports up to six channels (three stereo channels) of simultaneous recording
  • Large LCD touchscreen display for intuitive navigation
  • Large input-level knobs for fine adjustment
  • Built-in Hi-Speed USB interface for use as an audio interface or external storage
  • Loop-Back function; combine this with the built-in or external mics for the optimum live video streaming setup (only with Audio Interface function)
  • Bundled with SONAR LE software (PC)

    Will reserve judgement until such time it has been used out in the field. Just hope it’s not another plastic box hitting the market.

    Hardly ORTF array as mentioned here – would need a microphone spacing of 17cms !

    500MA Max current draw is quite a hefty load, but would be for lights on and all channels fired up with phantom power to XLRs, but that would mean some form of additional power supply being available, unless you went around with a pocketful of AAs..

    Can see a slight problem with the touch-screen technology used out in the field – that of dirt & dust scratches fogging the display. However nice to see some competition and progress being made with portable field recorders – the market has started to move again with the introduction of new technology!

    I like the idea of the 2 knobs on the front, the one on the Tascam Dr-100 looks hard to use in condition.
