Andrew Roth has been hunting 19th-century sounds. A self-described “audio archaeologist,” this fall he tracked down and recorded the musical instruments, bawdy songs and period slang that made up the actual sounds of San Francisco during the Gold Rush, for a new exhibit called “Boomtown.”
